The Montagu Heritage Association (MHA) hosted a highly successful open garden event at La Rochelle, on the corner of Toit and Long Street in Montagu, on Saturday, 23 November 2024. Over 90 attendees had the unique opportunity to explore the exquisite gardens and enjoy a captivating historical talk by Irma Jordaan, Chairperson of the MHA.
Irma shared the rich history of La Rochelle, often regarded as Montagu’s finest example of a stately home. Built in the late 1800s by PJ Joubert, the son of Montagu’s first mayor, Willem Adolf Joubert, the house was inspired by Pretoria’s Melrose House. La Rochelle became a centre of social and political significance, hosting prominent figures like Jan Smuts and Sir Hely-Hutchinson.
Today, La Rochelle continues to be a proud symbol of Montagu’s architectural and cultural heritage.
A heartfelt thank you to the current owner and the family for graciously opening their historic home to the public for this special occasion!
